This boss will be a mangrove tree that lives under the water at the end of the level. The tree has swallowed an unfortunate soul that didn’t know how to swim and did so anyway, creating its anger towards humanity due to having assimilated it.
Its health is represented by its leaves – the more you manage to damage it, the more leaves fall off. The way it deals damage is through its thorny hands, which it can slash at you with, or can throw its thorns at you when you are too far away. Another thing it can throw at you are the thorny fruit it stores deep in its leaves, which it leaves behind after the fight.
As it is a mangrove tree, it has roots beneath the water which have the ability to send waves to throw your raft off balance. This is achieved using old boots that the tree may or may not have stolen from travelers passing through the river.
I was inspired by this wonderful drawing of a mangrove tree I found on the internet, and I thought it was the perfect shape and had the perfect colour leaves and trunk to be a mangrove tree. The fruit that the tree chucks at you are inspired by a Costa Rican fruit that they call 'Mamón Chino', and I chose it because of its unique bright red colour and spiky outer shell.
The throwing of the fruit and thorns makes the mangrove tree feared by all animals and inhabitants of the riverside - but not the piranhas in the river, who will happily team up with the tree to try and knock you down and push you into the water.
Once you have defeated the tree by hurling parcels/whatever you’ve collected on your river journey at it, the tree leaves behind its fruit which you can use to heal in future battles and skirmishes, and you can use its wood to craft a catapult to launch the fruit/parcels at enemies.
